Information on Sclerotherapy (Infographic)

Infographic Summary

More than 80 million people in the United States suffer from some type of vascular condition. A common treatment for vascular conditions such as spider veins or varicose veins can be treated by sclerotherapy.

  • Sclerotherapy is a nonsurgical treatment procedure in which a vein specialist treats vascular disorders directly with an injection.
  • Typically a sclerotherapy treatment session lasts anywhere from 20 - 45 minutes depending on the severity of the vascular condition.
  • Sclerotherapy treatment can cause spider or varicose veins to close and fade away in 4-8 weeks. Follow up sessions may be needed.
  • Generally, most patients can expect positive results after one or more treatments. Research suggests that nearly 50 to 70 percent of the vascular condition being treated can be reduced with each session.
  • The American Society of Plastic Surgeons reports that 444,887 sclerotherapy procedures were performed in 2010.
  • One of the main benefits to sclerotherapy is there is no downtime. In addition, there is little discomfort.
